English actress Kate Beckinsale has been successful in her bid to secure libel damages against a newspaper.
The 35-year-old, who has appeared in films such as Pearl Harbour and the Aviator, took legal action against the Daily Express over a story it published claiming she had been dropped from a remake of Barbarella.
She was not in court for the settlement, which will see her pick up £20,000.
Her legal team argued that the story was entirely false and had caused considerable embarrassment.
By claiming that she had been dropped from the film, it wrongly implied her career was in decline, it was said.
During the hearing, Mr Justice Eady was told that Beckinsale had in fact never been in discussions about playing the role and there had never been any possibility she would take part in the project.
On behalf of the newspaper, its legal representative apologised and said it was happy to pay damages plus legal costs.
