Ex-mayor awarded £7,000 compensation
A woman has been awarded £7,000 in compensation after Manchester County Court ruled that she had been discriminated against at Trafford Council.
Dr Pauleen Lane, a former mayor, took the council to court after she was prevented from breastfeeding while using a civic car, the BBC reports.
Instead, Dr Lane had to drive behind in her own car when attending public engagements with her baby. She took action, claiming she had been treated unfairly due to her sex.
Council chief executive David McNulty said: "We take our equalities duties very seriously. The reputation and dignity of our mayor as our first citizen is important to the council as it is to local people.
"We have done and will continue to do our best to uphold the reputation of this civic post."
Dr Lane was mayor of the Trafford Borough for 2005-06. She is also a board member of the Northwest Regional Development Agency and a member of the Milton Keynes Partnership Board.
