Sheffield NHS payouts reach £9m in 3 years
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS trust has paid £8.8 million in compensation in the last three years.
Figures released show that the authority paid out £3.4 million between April 2004 to March 2005, compared with £4.2 million from the period from April 2005 and March 2006. Meanwhile, between April 2006 and January of this year £1.2 million claims have totalled £1.2 million. The largest amount paid to any claimant over the three-year period is £1.7 million.
The claims have arisen from negligence and mismanaged operations in five trusts including Royal Hallamshire, Weston Park, Jessop Wing, Northern General and Charles Clifford hospitals.
The latest statistics come after recent reports that Barnsley Hospital in Yorkshire has paid more than £3 million in compensation over the last three years, with £1.6 million going to patients in the last year alone.
