In this video, I explain why it is so vital to have the right lawyer for you in the event your relationship breaks down and list what you should consider when choosing your divorce lawyer.
The most important thing is that you choose a divorce lawyer who is right for your case.
You may experience a lot of friends and family giving you advice. Whilst they will undoubtedly have good intentions in giving you the advice, it may ultimately be incorrect because every divorce case is different.
For example, if you have a large pension or won a business you need a divorce lawyer who has expertise in these areas.
You must have a good working relationship with your divorce lawyer. This is because going through a divorce is an extremely difficult and emotional time.
Feeling comfortable with your lawyer is important because it is no use being sat there with a divorce lawyer and feeling as though you cannot talk to them.
The law firm you decide to go with should have in-house expertise and has contacts so that they can instruct other experts such as forensic accountants and actuaries.
Another thing to look for is a cost-conscious lawyer. You might want to consider looking for lawyers who offer fixed fee divorce arrangements and don’t just charge by the hour, especially if you are on a very tight budget.
Having been through a divorce myself I know that it can be an emotional rollercoaster. This is why it is so important you are able to work well with the solicitor you instruct. As a divorce lawyer, you are separated from the emotion, but having been through it myself, I recognise how difficult it is. Your life is a particular way one minute and then that completely changes when you separate from your husband or wife.
It is important you select a lawyer who can guide you through the process as smoothly as possible and strip away the emotion.
