Today is the launch of Resolution’s Manifesto for Family Law.
Resolution is an organisation of about 6,500 family lawyers and other family law professionals who work with separating couples to resolve disputes which minimises conflict and the impact on children.
The Resolution Manifesto sets out what changes should be made to the current family justice system to improve the lives of separating and separated families across England and Wales. Six key areas are identified:
- Protect vulnerable people who are separating
- Introduce measures to help separating people reach agreements out of Court
- Introduce a Parenting Charter to help parents understand their responsibilities when they separate
- Allow people to divorce without blame
- Help people understand how their divorce will affect their future finances
- Provide at least basic legal rights for couples who live together if they separate.
Many people are affected either directly or indirectly by separation and with certain changes to the current legal system it’s hoped that this will assist people in finding constructive outcomes in separation and help minimise the stress of separation to all members of the family.
As the Chair of Resolution’s Greater Manchester Region and a Family Solicitor for over 15 years, I know from speaking with many clients and local members how damaging the divorce process can be for separating couples.
It is imperative that a legal system is in place that provides the necessary support and protection for individuals involved in the process and at the same time providing fair and lasting outcomes.
At Slater and Gordon Lawyers most members of our Family Law team are also members of Resolution. As a result of our commitment to the Resolution Code of Practice, most of our divorce cases achieve a settlement by constructive negotiation, saving costs for everyone involved.
