Former Stoke Mandeville Children’s Doctor Michael Salmon Jailed for 18 Years

Michael Salmon has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for indecent assault and rape after a trial at Reading Crown Court.

The former children’s doctor, 79, was convicted on 6 February by Reading Crown Court of indecently assaulting young girls at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire. He was found guilty of nine counts of indecent assault and two rapes.

Michael Salmon worked at Stoke Mandeville Hospital at the same time Jimmy Savile was abusing patients on the wards although, jurors heard, their offences are not thought to be linked.

Salmon has previous child abuse convictions. In 1990 he was sentenced to three years in prison for indecent assaulting two girls aged 13 and 16. He was struck off the medical register as a result of these convictions.

During the trial, the Prosecution said that Michael Salmon thought he was “bomb-proof” because no one would believe a child over him. Salmon was arrested as part of Operation Yewtree and his conviction should give confidence to those who suffer abuse that their case will be dealt with seriously, sensitively and that offenders will be brought to justice.
