Wanted: Men Who Dumped Asbestos in Port Vale FC Car Park
Environmental officers from Stoke-on-Trent City Council are appealing to the public for assistance to help trace fly-tippers who dumped hazardous waste at Port Vale Football Club’s car park.
The dumping took place on 10 March 2014 and CCTV shows two men in high-visibility yellow jackets tipping the waste at the rear of the busy car park, just yards from a children’s centre, shortly before 5.30pm. Fifty kilogrammes of asbestos was found on the Lorne Street car park at Vale Park.
Dominic Gratty, Environmental Crime Unit Investigations Officer at the Council said, "Dumping large quantities of asbestos in a public place is a serious offence. We are determined to catch the people who did this, but we need the public’s help to trace a white Mercedes Sprinter van caught on CCTV entering and leaving Port Vale Football Club’s car park.
The long wheelbase van with registration number DE53 WOJ was checked by Police and found to have no registered keeper, insurance or MOT; as reported in the Stoke Sentinal.
Dominic Gratty appealed for any witnesses to come forward saying, “The car park was quite crowded at the time, and people may have witnessed the dumping or seen this van in or around North Staffordshire in recent weeks. We would urge anyone with any information at all to contact the Environmental Crime Unit, anonymously if necessary, on 01782 236778.”
He added, “Fly-tipping is an environmental crime which costs city taxpayers £21,000 a month to clean up. We intend to send the culprits a clear message that our City is not a dumping ground for dangerous waste.”
This is a very unfortunate incident considering that the dumping of the asbestos material took place only yards away from a children’s centre, thereby increasing the risk of these children, their families and workers at the centre from being exposed to deadly asbestos materials.
