Church of Scientology may be Registered to Perform Marriages

By Principal Lawyer, Family Law

Over recent years Scientology has been in the headlines for a variety of reasons. With a number of celebrities practising scientology including Tom Cruise and John Travolta, it seems there’s not a week that goes by where the religion is not in the headlines.

The Supreme Court has now decided that Scientology is a religion and since the Church of Scientology is a “place of meeting for religious worship”, then it could be registered for the solemnisation of marriages under the Marriage Act 1949.

The case concerned was R v Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages (2013); this finding will no doubt help grow the religions growing popularity.

The Church of Scientology has a large presence in Hollywood and anyone who has visited Los Angeles may have seen its massive Celebrity Centre located on Franklin Avenue, and the enormous compound on Sunset Boulevard, which is home to the church's West Coast headquarters; and it doesn't stop there. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the church owns seven historic Hollywood properties worth about $300 million, which are just part of their Los Angeles real estate empire of 26 properties.
