Pioneering breast surgeon Briony Ackroyd suspended by the GMC: Nisha Sharma comments
I was interested to read the story of pioneering breast surgeon, Briony Ackroyd being suspended by the GMC.
Consultant breast surgeon Briony Ackroyd was among the first in Britain to offer women with breast cancer a mastectomy as well as reconstruction surgery in the same operation but her technique has been criticised for being too risky after her complication rate was found to be high.
A quick Google search revealed that Ms Ackroyd had been suspended in 2000 after being accused of misleading patients about the risks of surgery.
While doctors who work hard to progress medicine should be commended, this story highlights the importance of striking a balance between innovation and patient safety.
I will be interested to find out more about the procedure performed by Ms Ackroyd and the GMC's findings.
