Nisha Sharma: Southern Cross and Care Home Industry in Financial Crisis
The Care Home industry appears to be in crisis. Southern Cross, a large care home operator, is reportedly struggling to afford the rents on its 750 homes.
Southern Cross blames the public spending cutbacks for reducing its earnings from local councils along with rising rents and increased care costs.
Today Southern Cross announced that it will pay nearly a third less to its landlords over the next four months. Southern Cross say that they hope landlords will cooperate with their decision but there is of course no guarantee.
As a result there is a real danger that Southern Cross’s 31,000 residents will be left homeless if a long term solution is not provided.
