27 April 2017

A police officer was awarded a six-figure settlement when a fall at work resulted in early retirement and loss of earnings.

Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Christopher Baxendale is an associate specialising in personal injury at Slater and Gordon in Manchester.

Settlement: £240,000.

What Happened:  Our client was a police officer. Whilst on duty a stair tread gave way under his foot and he slipped and fell.

Impact: Our client fractured his spine. His doctor recommended physiotherapy, but he had to be excused from any public order work. This meant that he lost out on overtime from working at football matches etc. The pain from his injuries meant he was unable to carry out the duties of a police officer. He was therefore retired on medical grounds on the recommendation of the police-appointed doctors

How Slater and Gordon Helped: We were instructed with only a few months left before the statutory limitation period expired so we had to move very quickly. We secured interim payments and quickly obtained a medical report, investigated the extent of the injuries and commenced court proceedings.

Decision: A six-figure settlement was awarded in compensation for our client’s injuries and his past and future loss of earnings and lost pension
