A worker was awarded a six-figure settlement following an employers’ liability claim when a heavy metal gate collapsed on them, causing extensive injuries.

Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Jennifer Maloney is a principal lawyer specialising in serious injury claims at Slater and Gordon in Manchester.

Settlement: £500,000

What Happened: Our client was working as a customer adviser at a DIY store. At the end of her shift, as she went to close and lock the gates behind her, the large metal gate collapsed and fell on her, landing on her chest and lower body.

Impact: Our client suffered fractures and bruising to the ribs. She went on to develop post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, tinnitus and chronic pain.  As a result, she has been unable to return to work.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: The defendant (the store) admitted liability at an early stage. To support our client’s employers’ liability claim, we obtained medical evidence in the fields of orthopaedics, neurology, psychiatry, anaesthesia/ pain and care.

Decision: The claim settled for £500,000, a significant improvement on the defendant’s earlier offer of £250,000.
