Compensation for Slip on Stairs in Dominican Republic

20 January 2016

Holidaymaker in Dominican Republic receives four figure settlement following a slip and fall on hotel stairs that resulted in fractured toes.

Slater and Gordon Lawyer: Ian Sephton is a travel litigation executive at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Manchester.

Settlement: £8,000

What Happened: Our client slipped while descending steps in his duplex room in holiday hotel in Dominican Republic. A cleaner had entered the room and mopped steps leaving them wet whilst our client was sunbathing on an upstairs balcony. He was unaware that the cleaner had serviced the room. The steps had no handrail.

Impact: Our client fractured two toes and sustained soft tissue bruising injuries to his leg, arm and the back and right sides of his hip.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: The defendant initially denied liability asserting that the steps were wet with condensation because the room door had been left open with the air conditioning running. We were able to successfully argue that was unlikely and the cleaner was responsible for the wet steps.

Decision: We negotiated a settlement of £8,000.
