Slater and Gordon Lawyers were instructed by the family of a former Cammell Lairds and Mersey Insulation worker who suffered from pleural thickening due to past asbestos exposure during his lifetime.

Slater and Gordon Solicitor: Louise Larkin is a Litigation Executive in the Chest & Asbestos Group at Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Liverpool.

What Happened: Our client worked for Cammell Laird Shipbuilders and Mersey Insulation when he was exposed to significant quantities of asbestos dust and fibres.

Impact: Our client was diagnosed with pleural thickening and sadly died during investigations into the claim.

How Slater and Gordon Helped: Our client was profoundly deaf and so contacted Slater and Gordon Litigation Executive, Louise Larkin who specialises in British Sign Language. The case was dealt with in confidence and an interpreter was not required as our client was able to communicate easily and clearly to Louise.

The claim continued on behalf of our client’s family when he passed away.

Decision: The claim was investigated and following negotiations the insurers agreed to pay damages.

Client feedback: “It’s a good thing to be able to use BSL but it’s so much better when they also understand deaf culture as Louise obviously did. We found out that she been brought up with profoundly deaf parents and this was evident when dad could converse with her and explain things in his own way and she fully understood.

“We will always be pleased that it was Louise who took on his case and won him his deserved compensation.“
