Case Study: Equal Pay in the Civil Service
12 November 2009
Slater and Gordon Lawyers (formerly Russell Jones & Walker) have successfully represented a senior female civil servant in an equal pay claim.
The civil servant was paid almost 20% less than a male colleague doing the same job as her. The difference in pay stemmed from the decision as to starting salary. At the time of recruitment, the male comparator had argued for a bigger starting salary, whilst our client had accepted the employer's proposed salary.
A grievance was brought against the employer who then accepted that the pay differential was unfair. As a result her pay was increased and she received back pay.
