Emma Read

Litigation Midwife

As an experienced midwife with over 16 years in clinical practice, I specialise in reviewing maternity care and identifying whether this has met expected professional standards. I do this work because I believe families deserve clarity, honesty, and accountability when outcomes are poor, and my role is to help clients understand what happened and why, in a clear and compassionate way.

Get to know Emma

I am a qualified midwife with 16 years experience working across maternity services, supporting women and families through pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period. Throughout my career, I have worked in a variety of clinical environments, developing a broad and balanced understanding of both low-risk and high-risk maternity care.

I am known for my thorough, reflective approach and my ability to consider complex clinical situations objectively. I have a strong interest in understanding how systems, communication, and decision-making influence outcomes for women and babies. This has naturally led to me work closely with governance processes, risk management and clinical review.

I am particularly passionate about ensuring that maternity care is safe, evidence-based, and woman-centred, and that lessons are learned when care falls below expected standards. I approach my work with empathy and professionalism, recognising the significant impact that adverse outcomes can have on families and healthcare professionals alike.

Outside of clinical work, I value continuous professional development and keeping up to date with national guidance, research, and best practice to ensure my work remains current and robust.

Career highlights

I have worked as a midwife within NHS maternity services for over 16 years and have always felt privileged to support women and families through one of the most important times in their lives. Some of the most meaningful moments of my career have included caring for friends, relatives and colleagues throughout their pregnancies and births, ad supporting families through both joyful and extremely difficult experiences.

My career progressed into a Band 7 leadership role within high-risk maternity services, alongside becoming a Professional Midwifery Advocate supporting colleagues and promoting safe, compassionate care. I also worked as a Perinatal Mortality lead, reviewing complex cases and helping identify learning to improve maternity safety.

I now bring this clinical knowledge and experience into my role as a Litigation midwife, helping bridge the gap between clinical care and the legal process with empathy, professionalism and clear communication.
