Were You Employed at the Wills Cigarette Factory in Newcastle?
We’re urgently seeking anyone who worked at the Wills cigarette factory on Coast Road in Newcastle upon Tyne, particularly those with knowledge of asbestos lagging within the facility. If you recall asbestos being present on pipework or have insights about its disturbance during maintenance, we’d like to hear from you.
Asbestos poses a serious health risk, especially when its fibres are disturbed and released into the air. Over time, the decay and maintenance of asbestos lagging can cause fibres to become airborne, exposing workers to harmful particles. Once inhaled, these fibres can become lodged in the lungs, leading to irritation, scarring, and, in some cases, the development of life-threatening conditions like mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.
Despite the UK banning asbestos in 1999, the legacy of its use continues to affect many lives.
The Wills cigarette factory, built in the 1940s and now known as the Wills Building, has long been a landmark in Newcastle upon Tyne. The factory ceased operations in 1986 and was redeveloped into residential apartments in the late 1990s.
If you worked at the Wills cigarette factory during the 1960s or 1970s, your memories and knowledge could be crucial. Please reach out to Caitlin Jones at 0330 995 5574 or email caitlin.jones@slatergordon.uk to share any information you have.
Your help could make a difference in uncovering the hidden health risks that continue to impact those exposed to asbestos.
