Mis-sold vehicle finance claims

Can I claim for mis-sold motorbike finance?

Our experts explain if you can claim for a motorbike bought with a finance agreement, and how.

27 February 2025

In 2021 there were over 1.3 million motorbikes registered in Great Britain. This statistic is part of a steadily rising trend, meaning in the years prior there were still more than a million registered motorbikes on the road. The motorbikes bought with a finance agreement before January 2021 could be eligible for compensation.

Can I make a finance claim for my motorbike?

Yes, you can. While this claim is commonly referred to as a ‘car finance claim’, it also applies to other vehicles bought with a finance agreement. This means you can claim on several types of vehicles such as:

  • Vans
  • Cars
  • Boats
  • Caravans
  • Motor homes
  • Planes

Any vehicle finance agreement made before January 2021 could be eligible if there was discretionary commission taken by the lender. This means that you can still make a claim if the vehicle is paid off, or on behalf of a loved one who has passed away.

Why can I only claim for finance agreements from before January 2021?

In January 2021, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) banned discretionary commission arrangements.

The FCA has described a discretionary commission arrangement as an arrangement between lenders and brokers which allowed the broker to change the interest rates offered to customers. The banning of these discretionary arrangements stopped lenders allowing brokers to increase interest rates on finance agreements.

Vehicle finance claims are based on the discretionary commission arrangements which would not have been included in finance deals after January 2021 due to the ban.
