Bike Week: 40% of people would cycle more if the roads were safer

Cycling is increasingly promoted as a healthier, more sustainable alternative to driving, particularly around rising fuels costs and a growing focus on wellbeing. However, research reveals that safety concerns remain a significant barrier for many.

A survey, by law firm, Slater and Gordon, found that 40% of adults would cycle more frequently if roads felt safer. Concerns about poor road conditions and dangerous driving deter people from choosing cycling as part of their everyday travel.

During Bike Week, Slater and Gordon is encouraging motorists to act more responsibly, helping create an environment where cyclists feel safer and more confident.

The research found that nearly half (48%) of all respondents avoid certain roads as they felt unsafe. Key concerns include careless driving, potholes and increasing traffic levels, all of which pose risks not only to cyclists but to all road users.

While cycling is often viewed as a convenient and eco-friendly option, particularly in city centre areas, the research suggests that shifting perceptions around safety are making it a less straightforward choice for many.

In addition, 39% of respondents believe there should be compulsory insurance for cyclists, highlighting concern around the safety of cyclists and drivers’ heightened anxiety when approaching cyclists on the road.

While cycling is often viewed as a convenient and eco-friendly option, particularly in city centre areas, the research suggests that shifting perceptions around safety are making it a less straightforward choice for many.

Matthew Tomlinson, head of serious injury (North) said: “Road safety ultimately relies on the responsibility of every driver to always be patient and considerate when they are travelling, for the safety of themselves, their passengers and others on the road such as cyclists. In turn, cyclists must also take care in understanding how they can follow traffic laws and respect other road users.”

“It is concerning that so many people who would like to cycle more feel unable to do so because they do not feel safe. Improving road conditions and strengthening road safety measures are essential if we want cyclists to feel protected.”

Almost half of UK adults don’t feel safe on our roads
New research exposes the stark reality that UK roads are far from safe. Almost half of adults (44%) believe their local streets are dangerous, while only 29% feel confident they are safe to travel on and more than half (55%) believe roads in their area have become more dangerous over the last year.
