Lawyers With a Taste For Travel Join Team at Slater and Gordon

Travel law specialists Slater and Gordon have appointed two new solicitors to join the firm’s flagship office in Manchester.

Victoria Cox and Joanna Holyst-Salej will act exclusively for people who have suffered serious accidents or injury abroad.

Formerly colleagues at CFG Law, they join an experienced team across the country dealing with a wide range of multi-jurisdictional matters including package holiday claims, road traffic collisions, accidents on flights and cruise ships and botched cosmetic surgery.

Joanna is originally from Poland and previously worked as a translator and interpreter which sparked her interest in the language of law.

“I mainly worked at the magistrates’ and crown courts, translating often complex legal arguments, and I found it fascinating,” she said.

“It’s something I’ve carried into my current job as I work with a lot of Polish clients who speak limited English and it’s incredibly reassuring for them to be able to discuss things in their native language.”

Joanna, who studied languages at university, qualified in 2014, taking evening classes to gain her Graduate Diploma in Law while still working as a translator.

Wigan-born Victoria studied law at University College London and has been practising for 11 years including as head of travel at her previous firm.

She said: "Jo and I have specialised in personal injury law ever since starting our careers as solicitors, handling many different types of claim, but we both find travel law the most interesting area. Every country's laws are different, so you are constantly learning while working with other legal professionals across the world.

“From a client’s perspective, they have suffered a serious accident or injury then have the added stress of a different legal system so it’s also great to be able to help them navigate that and take that pressure away.”

Alicia Alinia, managing director of personal injury at Slater and Gordon, said: “The expansion of our travel team is in response to a growing number of enquiries in this area and the need to maintain the high level of service we offer to our clients.

“Cases involving different applicable laws are rarely straightforward, but Victoria and Joanna really impressed us with their knowledge and we’re delighted to welcome them to the team.”
