Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt and requested physical custody of their six children.
The couple has been together for 12 years and have been married for two of those years.
Jolie, 41, filed the divorce petition on Monday citing ‘irreconcilable differences’ according to the Daily Mail. Court papers have been submitted requesting that Jolie has parental responsibility for their six children aged eight to 15, allowing Pitt, 52, visitation rights only. Jolie’s lawyer said that she had made the decision ‘for the health of the family’.
Pitt made a statement last night saying: “I am very saddened by this but what matters most now is the wellbeing of our children.”
The Hollywood power couple met in 2004 when they both starred in the film Mr and Mrs Smith as a married couple who are secretly both assassins that get hired by competing agencies to kill each other. They were seen together soon after Pitt’s divorce from Jennifer Aniston in January 2005 and have since adopted three children and had three children together.
Jolie has now instructed divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, 48, known for representing celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Heidi Klum and most recently Johhny Depp in his separation from Amber Heard.
It is understood that any disagreement the couple might have over their children will be decided under the American legal system despite them sharing a family home in France and having originally adopted three of their children from Cambodia, Ethiopia and Vietnam.
