NHS Acute Trusts Get the Most Complaints

Barts Health NHS Trust had the most with 2,451 complaints out of a total number of clinical incidents of 579,271.

This was followed by University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust with 2,034 complaints from 401,821 clinical incidents. The other NHS Acute Trusts with over 1,000 complaints for the year were:

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust (1,405)
Colchester Hospital University NHS Foundation Trust (1,257)
Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (1,192)
Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust (1,126)
St George's Healthcare NHS Trust (1,083)
Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (1,066).

In relation to Barts, the Ombudsman received 289 enquiries and accepted 43 for investigation of which it fully or partly upheld 12.

As for the Leicester Trust, the Ombudsman received 101 enquires, accepted 19 for investigation and upheld fully or in part only 2.

The Ombudsman’s Report follows on from the Department of Health’s report in January 2014 entitled ‘Hard Truths The Journey to Putting Patients First’. This was HM Government’s response to the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust Public Enquiry.

It is to be hoped that this is very much the start of a change in culture for the NHS where openness and transparency are made top priority. So, too, that this might make it easier for victims of failings in the system to obtain redress.

But in addition to this, such transparency will also hopefully help the NHS Trusts themselves to improve their standard of care and avoid repeating the same failures time and again.

In the meantime, the unavoidable fact is that there are an enormous amount of complaints being made about the NHS and it only goes to emphasise the importance of tackling the underlying problems in the institution as a whole.
