Gender equality in boardrooms remains a big priority for the European Commission (EC), despite the fact the body no longer expects compulsory quotas to be implemented.
That is according to Viviane Reding, justice commissioner at the EC, who has told the BBC her organisation is still determined to increase the number of women holding high-level positions at listed companies across the continent.
Earlier this year, the EC drew up a plan whereby all such firms would be legally-obliged to fill at least 40 per cent of their boardroom positions with females by 2020.
This has since been altered to organisations being set an "objective" of reaching this figure - an amendment that has led to some people saying the rules have become watered down and easier for firms to ignore.
However, Ms Reding insisted that the proposals still represent a "breakthrough" in the quest for equality and said the change has been made only to make sure the EC does not "interfere with the freedom to conduct a business".
