Brain damaged engineer awarded seven-figure damages sum
Personal injury compensation of more than £1 million has been awarded to an engineer who was left brain damaged following an accident at work.
Richard Chodkiewicz sustained life-changing injuries when he was hit by a piece of scaffolding that fell some 14 storeys down a lift shaft he was working in at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bristol in July 2008.
At the time, the 53-year-old was operating with a colleague at the bottom of the shaft while another man was working above when a pole measuring 50cms and weighing 3.7kgs fell from a piece of piano wire.
This piece of equipment struck Mr Chodkiewicz on the head, leaving him severely brain damaged and in need of 24-hour care for the rest of his life.
Following a High Court hearing in which he was granted a seven-figure damages settlement, Mr Chodkiewicz's wife Karen commented: "At times he has difficulty remembering the names of his own children, which is heart-breaking."
