Security guard wins unfair dismissal compensation
Unfair dismissal compensation has been awarded to a security guard following an employment tribunal.
According to the Staffordshire Newsletter, Keith Smith took legal action against Status UK - trading as Vellen Guarding - after he was sacked for allegedly breaching health and safety regulations at a site in Stafford.
Mr Smith was fired on the basis he had let a member of the public onto the working premises after they made a complaint about the level of noise from the factory, which may have resulted in the uninsured individual being involved in an accident.
He was initially suspended for breaking company protocol before being fired for unprofessional behaviour.
However, Mr Smith contested this decision and, at a hearing in Birmingham, tribunal judge Leslie Antis has now ruled that he is entitled to damages for unjust dismissal and an unpaid bonus.
"The award is to be decided at a later date," the official said.
