Sheryl Gascoigne wins 'substantial' libel damages from Sunday Mirror

Sheryl Gascoigne, former wife of ex-England international footballer Paul, has been awarded an undisclosed damages claim on the grounds of libel.

According to the Press Association, Ms Gascoigne has accepted a "substantial" compensation settlement for claims made by her former mother-in-law and other family members within an article published in the Sunday Mirror in March 2009.

In this story, entitled "I blame Sheryl", it was suggested that Ms Gascoigne had provoked a physical attack on her by her ex-husband in October 1996 and also forced the former star - who represented clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio during his playing career - to appear in a television documentary despite him being in an unfit mental state.

The High Court in London was told by Ms Gascoigne's representative that "each and every one of these allegations is untrue" and the newspaper has now agreed to award her damages as well as pay for her legal costs.
