Lily Allen wins libel damages

Recording artist Lily Allen has been successful in her bid to secure libel damages against the News Group Newspapers.

The celebrity, who is also a talk show host and actress in addition to her musical endeavours, took legal action over an article that appeared in the Sun.

Entitled "Ranting Lily", the story suggested she had made a number of offensive remarks about David and Victoria Beckham, as well as Ashley and Cheryl Cole.

It was alleged in the piece that Allen had made the remarks to French football magazine So Foot.

In a new development, News Group Newspapers - which also publishes the Times and the News of the World - accepted that Allen was never interviewed by So Foot and did not make the comments.

The firm's legal representative apologised on its behalf for the upset and embarrassment caused by the article and Allen has received a substantial sum in libel damages.
