Firm found guilty of unfair dismissal
A company has been found guilty of unfair dismissal after getting rid of one of its workers without using the proper procedures.
During a recent employment tribunal held in Birmingham, it was ruled that Create Design & Print did not comply with the Employment Rights Act when making a staff member redundant, the Evesham Journal reports.
Jamie Hill lost his job after the business - which specialises in graphic design, corporate identity and advertising, among other things - needed to axe personnel in order to reduce its operating costs.
The 31-year-old claimed unfair dismissal, breach of contract and unpaid holiday wages.
Tribunal chairperson Karen Tucker recently ruled in support of his case, saying it was well-founded.
She awarded him £5,000, which included a 20 per cent increase as a 'penalty' for the firm's breach of dismissal procedures.
Responding to the outcome of the case, Mr Hill said he was happy.
