Teacher seeks payout over claims she was sacked by email
A teacher who claims she was sacked by email while on sick leave fighting cancer is seeking compensation.
Melinda Bodnar was diagnosed with bowel cancer last year at the age of 27 and was given a 30 per cent chance of survival, the Daily Mail reports.
According to the teacher, her contract with Oaktree Nursery School was terminated while she was undergoing chemotherapy to treat the disease.
Ms Bodnar alleges that she was discriminated against on the basis of her cancer and is looking to secure a payout of £25,000 for loss of earnings and hurt feelings.
She said: "When I got the email, I was still very sick and had to deal with losing my job as well as having cancer."
"I have decided to do something about this on principle," she added.
According to Cancer Research UK, bowel cancer is the third most common form of the disease in the UK and a total of more than 37,500 people are diagnosed with it each year.
