The appointment by the News Corporation of the former head of international at the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) points to continued legal battles concerning the firm's TV broadcaster and broadband provider Sky, it has been suggested.
Recently, Andrea Appella joined the firm as director of legal, competition and regulatory affairs for Europe and Asia.
According to a report in the Lawyer magazine, the move has been made in the context of ongoing disputes between the organisation and regulators over the rates Sky charges rival broadcasters.
The publication also points to News Corp founder Rupert Murdoch's campaign against what he views as the BBC's monopoly across a range of media outlets.
It stated that the legal issues have "kept lawyers at News Corp and Sky busy enough to be glad of the extra manpower".
In his new role, Mr Appella will be responsible for reporting to the general counsel for Europe and Asia Jeff Palker.
As well as its television and broadband activities, News Corp is a publisher of English language newspapers.
