Gerrard charged with assault and affray
Merseyside footballer Steven Gerrard has been charged with assault and affray after an incident which allegedly occurred outside a nightclub.
The 28-year-old England international and Liverpool player was one of five people arrested after a man was taken to hospital with facial injuries.
Named as Marcus McGee, the 34-year-old local businessman is said to have lost a tooth and needed stitches to cuts on his face.
John Doran and Ian Smith have also been charged and bailed in relation to the disturbance.
All three will appeal in court next month accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray.
Gerrard was out with friends celebrating Liverpool's 5-1 victory over north-east team Newcastle, which saw the midfielder score two goals and tightened his team's grip on first place in the Premier League.
Liverpool Football Club has not yet commented on the incident and the manager of the Lounge Inn, near which the alleged fight was said to have taken place, also declined to make reference to the incident.
