Libel case over Facebook entry gets underway

A legal case concerning libel allegations over an entry made on social networking site Facebook has begun.

Mathew Firsht, the managing director of Applause Store Productions, launched the case over details that were posted about him that were untrue.

He is suing former school friend Grant Rapheal for libel and misuse of private information and claims that Mr Rapheal created a profile and link on the site entitled "Has Mathew Firsht lied to you?" from his flat following an argument between the pair.

The entry contained information concerning Mr Firsht's location, birthday, relationship status and activities.

It also signed him up to a number of groups, including Gay in the Wood and Gay Jews in London.

Mr Rapheal, meanwhile, denies liability, arguing that strangers at a party held at his home secretly created the false profile in a spare room.

Facebook was launched in February 2004 by Harvard student Mark Zuckerberg.
