Rafa Benitez, the manager of Liverpool Football Club, is suing News Group Newspapers in a libel case, the Press Gazette reports.
According to the publication, Benitez is taking legal action over a story which appeared in the News of the World enititled "It's your fault Benitez in new blast at owners".
The manager claims that that article implied he blamed the club's owners for the failure of the team's title hopes and identified them as responsible for destabilising the club.
Benitez, who has been with Liverpool since June 2004, says that the story seriously injured his reputation and caused him upset and embarrassment.
He is now claiming damages, aggravated damages and an injunction banning repetition of the allegations at the centre of the case.
News Group Newspapers is run by News International, a British newspaper publisher owned by Australian business tycoon Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.
