A couple whose children were taken into temporary care when they were on holiday have begun legal proceedings over alleged libel, it has been revealed.
Eamon and Antoinette McGuckin were in Portugal when the incident occurred and are now seeking damages over media reports that their children were taken away because they were too drunk.
The couple, who are from the Upperlands - a small village in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland - vigorously denied that they were intoxicated, saying that they would never put their children in danger.
According to reports in the Press Gazette, Mr McGuckin says that he had asked staff at the Aparthotel Mourabel to look after his children while he took his wife, who had taken ill, to hospital.
The family had been staying in Vilamoura, a tourist complex situated on the Algarve, when the events took place.
