Football manager launches libel suit

Football manager Martin O'Neill has launched a libel suit against a website claiming damages of up to £50,000, it has been reported.

According to the Press Gazette, O'Neill is pursuing legal action against publishers 365 Media Group over its Transfer Gossip webpage.

He claims that a story published on April 13th last year was defamatory and is seeking damages, as well as an injunction banning the web publisher from repeating the allegations upon which the case is centred.

The Press Gazette also states that the football manager was successful in a previous libel suit in 2004, when he accepted undisclosed damages and a public apology from the Daily Record over claims he was about to quit his position at Celtic and move to Liverpool Football Club.

Born in 1952, O'Neill has experienced stints managing teams such as Norwich City and Leicester City and is currently in charge of Aston Villa.
