Sports star files defamation claim
Former US major-league baseball player Roger Clemens has filed a lawsuit against his former trainer who, he says, made defamatory comments against him.

Brian McNamee alleged that he injected Clemens with steroids and human growth hormones over a period of three years between 1998 and 2001.

The lawsuits states: "All of McNamee's accusations are false and defamatory per se. They injured Clemens' reputation and exposed him to public hatred, contempt, ridicule and financial injury.

"McNamee made the allegations with actual malice, knowing they were false."

It went on to say that the baseball player's reputation has been injured as a result of the claims, which have caused him to suffer mental anguish, public humiliation, shame and embarrassment.

He is now seeking damages for these injuries from his former trainer in an amount to be decided by a jury.

Born in 1962, Clemens last played for the New York Yankees as a starting pitcher.
