Parents to sue after young psychiatric patient commits suicide

Parents to sue after young psychiatric patient commits suicide

The parents of an 18-year-old psychiatric patient who committed suicide after being able to leave a secure hospital are to sue.

Charlotte Clarke died after catching a bus run by Barrow Hospital into Bristol and throwing herself off a multi-storey car park.

After an inquest into her death, Ms Clarke's parents stated that they plan to take action against Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS trust, which provides specialist mental health services to people in the Avon and Wiltshire areas.

They accuse the trust, which is responsible for Barrow Hospital, of negligence.

Her father Damian Clarke commented: "When the trust's representative gave evidence, my wife and I mutually felt that her answers and explanations to the coroner and us were cold and uncaring," the Weston & Somerset Mercury reports.

The trust has since stated that it has looked at what went wrong in this case and has put a "number of different measures in place".
