Firm made to pay after worker is crushed to death

Firm made to pay after worker is crushed to death
A company has been fined following an incident in which a worker died after being crushed, Workplace Law Network reports.

John Cavill, a security guard for SDS Security Services, was working on the premises of E Pawson & Son, a provider of logistics and warehousing, at the time of the accident.

As he was closing a metal security gate, it fell from its tracks and landed on top of him.

The 54-year-old's body lay for over ten hours prior to being discovered, although a pathologist's report suggested that he had died almost instantly.

A subsequent investigation found that safety bolts which would have prevented the gate falling had not been fitted.

After pleading guilty to health and safety breaches at Doncaster Magistrates Court, SDS Security Services was fined £2,500. Meanwhile, the case against E Pawson & Son was referred to the Crown Court.
