Teacher wins over £20k in unfair dismissal hearing
A teacher from Coventry has been awarded over £20,000 in compensation following a successful claim of unfair dismissal, the Coventry Telegraph reports.
International School and Community College, a newly designated business and enterprise centre situated in Tile Cross, east Birmingham, had alleged that former employee Eileen Hunter's activities in the union undermined the school and caused fellow staff members to feel intimidated.
At an employment tribunal hearing in Birmingham, however, it was decided that Ms Hunter had been unfairly dismissed and she was awarded £27,883 in compensation, of which she received £22,307 after deductions for "contributory factors".
A prior hearing had ruled that the college was wrong in its dismissal of the psychology teacher, however, a decision regarding the sum of money to be paid was adjourned until more recently when Ms Hunter reached an agreement with the school's representatives.
