Ex-wife receives £100k from widow
The widow of a businessman who died of leukaemia has been ordered to pay his ex-wife £100,000, the Daily Record reports.
Elizabeth, as the publication refers to her, who was divorced by her late former husband Owen Soulsbury in 1986 after 20 years of marriage, was awarded the money by three appeal judges.
Widow Kathleen Soulsbury married Mr Soulsbury, a former financier and one of the founders of investment firm Skandia, which has grown considerably and now employs 53,000 employees, in 1992.
She had been fighting to keep the money but judges ruled that a promise made by Mr Soulsbury ten years prior to his death to pay £100,000 to Elizabeth when he died - in return for a cessation of the maintenance payments he was making at the time - was binding.
After the hearing Elizabeth said: "I'm still shaking and I 'm waiting for a call from the solicitor to check the details. I never held out much hope I would succeed. Kathleen has fought it every step of the way."
