Building site worker families win payout
The families of two steeplejacks who died onsite during a job have been awarded more than £300,000 each in compensation.
Paul Wakefield and Craig Whelan were killed in an explosion at the Metal Box plant in Bolton while fixing a chimney in May 2002.
Construction union UCATT took up the case on behalf of the two men's families and eventually obtained the payouts earlier this month.
"Nothing can ever recompense a family for the loss of a loved one killed at work," commented Alan Ritchie, general secretary of UCATT.
"Hopefully, the compensation awarded to these two families will ensure that they do not suffer continued financial misery."
Manslaughter charges against two employees of Metal Box were dropped after the incident. Three employees went on to admit to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act and were fined a total of £17,000, the Bolton News reports.
