Carer awarded £18K following porn-related dismissal

Carer awarded £18K following porn-related dismissal

A carer who had watched porn confiscated from one of the youths under her supervision has won compensation worth over £18K, newspaper the Daily Record has reported.

Frances Conkie, a worker for East Dunbartonshire Council, was fired on nine counts of gross misconduct, including the watching of a porn DVD she had confiscated from a 16-year-old.

Ms Conkie defended this decision, arguing she had been watching the DVD to confirm it was porn, and said there was no risk of other children being exposed as there was no one else in the unit at the time.

She had also been dismissed because of allowing unauthorised visitors to the home, including her husband who was claimed to have also asked the centre youths for adult material.

The tribunal largely agreed with Ms Cronkite, awarding her only 25 per cent of the blame and ruling her dismissal unfair, for which she will be awarded £18,300.
