Widowed spouse of asbestos-cancer victim sues for compensation

A Hampshire woman whose husband died from asbestos-related cancer is suing the Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust for £150,000 in compensation.

Patricia Couchman of Kingsclere is to sue the Trust claiming her husband contracted malignant mesothelioma as a result of exposure to asbestos fibres and dust when he was working at the hospital between 1966 and 1997.

In the case, which has been filed at the High Court, Ms Couchman claims that the hospital was both in breach of statutory duty and acting negligently.

In March of this year, the government revealed a series of proposals set to facilitate and fast-track the process of claims for victims of asbestos cancer.

Under the terms of the proposals spouses of people who contracted the disease from physical contact will also be able to claim compensation as well as those who contract the disease directly.
