Steven Gerrard wins magazine libel case

Steven Gerrard wins magazine libel case
Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has won undisclosed damages from a magazine which suggested that he had met with representatives from Real Madrid.

Mr Gerrard sued London Sport magazine when it reported that the player was staying in a London hotel at the same time as Ramon Calderon, the president of Real Madrid, which might have lead readers to surmise that a big-money transfer was in the offing.

The magazine, which had not confirmed the facts of the story, had initially printed the allegations in January 2006, and then repeated them in a similar article the following month.

The jury found the story to be untrue and awarded the damages and apology from Echo Publishing which Mr Gerrard was seeking.

Speaking in court Mr Tyrrell who was representing Mr Gerrard said: "Steven Gerrard has not been involved in secret talks with Real Madrid or indeed any other football club relating to a possible move.

"He is more than happy at Liverpool, to whom he is contracted," he added.
