The All Wales Lung Cancer Nurses 15th Annual Conference
Slater and Gordon were proud to co-sponsor the All Wales Lung Cancer Forum Conference 2015.
Friday 9th October 2015 saw the 15th Annual held at the Village Hotel in Swansea. “Raising the bar” was the mantra of the conference, with a focus on evaluating and improving the experience of patients going through treatment for lung cancer.
The day began with a welcome and introduction from Vice Chair, Jonathan Long, followed by talks by health care professionals within the field. Consultant Respiratory Physician, Dr Mick Peake, provided an overview of lung cancer, with a talk on diagnostic investigations by Consultant Chest Physician, Dr Enrys Evans. Dr Jason Shannon, a Consultant Histopathologist, spoke on the subject of pathology, with Consultant Oncologist, Dr Alison Brewster addressing treatments. Following refreshments, information on palliative care and communication in clinical trials was provided by Sisters Nuala Galligan, Joanne Lane and Alison Edwards. Lastly, but certainly not least, the day was rounded off with a patient’s story from Kath Davies.
The Chest and Asbestos Disease team at Slater and Gordon frequently work with lung cancer patients and their families and have seen first-hand the effect it can have on people’s lives and how the hard work and care of healthcare professionals can make a difference to patients going through treatment.
Events such as these clearly show that there is a great deal of medical expertise in Wales, which is still regretfully very much needed for respiratory and asbestos diseases in particular. The invaluable help that lung cancer nurses provide on the ‘front-line’, alongside patients and their families facing these problems will sadly be needed for years to come.
It is without fail an enormous privilege getting to know patients and their loved ones, when providing the legal help needed to gain the compensation that they so rightly deserve. The dedication of the treating nurses is always apparent and never goes by unnoticed at these difficult times.
