It’s not unusual to hear of celebrity marriages not lasting. There are a lot of celebrities who think sensibly and sign a pre-nuptial agreement before getting married to protect their often high-value assets. There are some celebrities, however, who didn’t get a pre-nuptial agreement before getting married and they perhaps should have done.
In the celebrity world it can be very easy to get swept up in the lavish lifestyle if money is no object. So when romances spark up and lead to a big celebrity wedding, getting a pre-nuptial agreement may not be at the forefront of their minds.
Here are some celebrity couples who should have signed a pre-nup before saying their vows:
Russell Brand and Katy Perry
The pair got married in October 2010. 14 Months later in December 2011, Russell filed for divorce. Since there was no pre-nup, under California law, the state’s community property clause divided the money and property acquired during the marriage 50/50 – regardless of who earned the most money.
Mel Gibson and Robyn Denise Moore
They were married for 28 years but as there wasn’t a pre-nup, Robyn stood to receive 50% of Mel’s estimated $900 million fortune that he’d earned by the time the pair separated.
Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe
The couple got divorced in 2005 and, similar to Russell Brand and Katy Perry, under California law, their assets were split 50/50 even though Reese was earning $20 million a movie by the time of separation and Ryan was only earning $2.5 million.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie
Even though Madonna is worth an estimated $500 million, she and Guy didn’t bother signing a pre-nup when they got married. As a result, Madonna ended up paying out between $76 and $92 million in their divorce.
Paul McCartney and Heather Mills
It is said that many people urged Sir Paul to get a pre-nup before marrying Heather. But when their marriage ended in divorce after 5 years, due to no pre-nup, Heather received a settlement of approximately $35 million. As well as this, Paul also has to pay for their daughter’s nanny and education until she is 18 years old which won’t be until 2021. The amount Paul has to pay totals $70,000 a year.
On the flip side of no pre-nup, some celebrities go to extremes when they do get a pre-nup, for example, the case of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline. Their pre-nup was very detailed and 60 pages long and meant that Kevin was only entitled to $1million of Britney’s multi-million dollar fortune, rather than half of it. Their pre-nup also stated that any gift worth over $7,000 should have its own legal document to say who would own the item in the event of divorce.
