UK Carpenters Mesothelioma Risk Highlighted by American Victims Group

An American centre for victims of Mesothelioma has launched an awareness campaign for US construction workers pointing to the high risks faced by carpenters across the Atlantic.

UK carpenters born in the 1940s have a 1 in 17 chance of developing Mesothelioma according to research by the Health and Safety Executive and Cancer Research UK. This is the highest risk of all UK tradesmen born in the same decade with electricians, decorators and plumbers having a 1 in 50 risk and other construction workers having a risk of 1 in 125.

The Mesothelioma Victims Center brought attention to these UK statistics in a recent campaign aimed at educating Mesothelioma victims who were exposed to harmful asbestos fibres on various construction sites in the USA. The campaign targets carpenters in particular, highlighting the amount of asbestos exposure they faced on construction sites.

Although exposure to asbestos in factories reduced after the UK Government introduced the Asbestos Regulations in 1969, the risk among UK construction workers continued.

Introducing the American campaign the Mesothelioma Victims Center said, "There was a recent study in the UK that indicates that carpenters born after 1940 have a 1 in 17 chance of developing mesothelioma”

"Tragically mesothelioma is alive and well here in the United States as well, especially among former construction workers."

As a solicitor specialising in Mesothelioma compensation claims I have acted for a number of UK carpenters, shop fitters and joiners who have developed asbestos cancer after working with asbestos. A lot would use asbestos sheeting in their work or be around others using asbestos materials such as asbestos ceiling tiles, insulation, asbestos board or cement.
