Philip Pickett has been jailed for 11 years for raping and assaulting teenage pupils at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
The attacks took place between 1979 and 1983 when Philip Pickett worked as a freelance instructor at the school. An expert on early music Pickett taught at the Guildhall for 25 years where he attacked young women in sound-proofed windowless practice rooms.
After the Jimmy Savile sexual abuse scandal came to light allegations were brought against Philip Pickett by a former pupil who was 16 at the time. In August 2013 Pickett was arrested for assault and rape. After this more survivors who were aged 21 and 17 at the time came forward and pressed charges against Pickett.
Getting his students in sound-proofed music rooms, locking the doors and turning out the lights was a method Phillip Pickett used in order to abuse pupils who looked up to him. Lead investigator Detective Superintendent Maria Woodall said, “He took advantage of his position of power and knows that these young girls were in awe of him because he was an accomplished professional.”
Charles Wide, the Judge who presided over the case, said to Philip Pickett, ”this was specific targeting of a vulnerable victim, a girl you were teaching and you had power over who would be reluctant to complain and most unlikely to complain.” Judge Wide concluded that Pickett’s crimes were a “gross abuse of trust”.
Police have appealed for survivors of abuse at Guildhall Music School to come forward.
