Diffuse Pleural Thickening: A Slow-Ticking Time Bomb
Pleural Thickening, also known as Diffuse Pleural Thickening, is an incurable lung disease. It involves scarring and thickening along the pleura, the thin lining of the lungs.
A major cause of Pleural Thickening is exposure to asbestos. Asbestos fibres work their way into the pleura. Pleural Thickening symptoms include a tightness of the chest and breathlessness due to the reduced function of the lungs.
Asbestos – The Silent Killer
Originally manipulated for its physical properties of sound absorption, fire and heat resistance, strength and affordability, asbestos was used as electrical and building insulation until the carcinogenic effect of asbestos dust caused it to be banned in the 1980s and ‘90s. Many industrial workers in the UK were exposed to asbestos dust before its outright ban, unaware of the severity of asbestos-related diseases.
It is a terrifying fact that Pleural Thickening develops from 10 - 20 years after exposure to asbestos fibres. For many industrial workers the contamination will have taken place years ago.
In the early stages of Diffuse Pleural Thickening there are no symptoms. Studies suggest that Pleural Thickening occurs in 5 – 35% of people exposed to asbestos between 3 – 34 years after their initial exposure to asbestos. Though the condition may begin within a year of exposure it commonly takes 10 – 20 years before a doctor can make a diagnosis.
Pleural Thickening Compensation Claims
It is difficult to see how money could provide compensation for the suffering caused by Pleural Thickening, but it can help to provide for the care needs that may be required along with financial security. Pleural Thickening claims in the UK typically receive compensation amounts ranging from £15,000 to over £100,000.
There are time limits for making asbestos compensations claims in court. If you are diagnosed with pleural thickening it is important to seek expert legal advice immediately.
