The mother of Michael O’Neill from Huyton, Liverpool, worked at the Jacobs biscuit factory in Aintree, Liverpool in the late 1970s. Mrs Isobel O’Neill was employed as an oven worker and was exposed to asbestos dust and fibres as she worked in the vicinity of men as they carried out repairs and maintenance to the ovens and pipework. Many people who lived locally also worked at the factory.
Mother of seven, Mrs Isobel O’Neill underwent numerous painful tests before she was given the devastating diagnosis of Mesothelioma. She was 74 years old when she died. Prior to her illness, Mrs O’Neill was full of energy who spent a lot of time with her family.
Mr O’Neill is currently pursuing a Mesothelioma compensation claim against Jacobs which exposed his mother to deadly asbestos dust and to bring those who exposed his mother to asbestos to justice.
Michael’s brothers and sister were only young when their mother worked in the factory but they could remember their mother chatting about ‘dust floating around the block where their mother worked’.
Mr O’Neill’s specialist Mesothelioma Lawyer, Louise Larkin of Slater and Gordon Lawyers in Liverpool said, “This is a tragic case of an active, loving mother and grandmother’s life being cut short because of the actions of a former employer.
“We hope that some of Isobel’s colleagues, or even people who worked on the site during her period there, will be able to help piece together the conditions to which she was subject. She had described working near large ovens which were lagged with asbestos which were constantly being repaired. We are keen to hear from other employees who can give more information about how the asbestos became airborne.”
Slater and Gordon Lawyers are continuing their fight to obtain justice for Michael and his family.
